For hundreds of years, Ringsted’s location right in the heart of Zealand with a Landsting and intersection overland routes and waterways have made the area a central and extremely important area.
The old medieval road across Zealand, the so-called “King Valdemar’s road”, intersected the area and several of the mounds are placed along this road. In order to defend themselves against strangers, it was natural for the population to build castles for habitation for the local great noble but also for protection against enemies. These castles or defences are today just castle mounds. Only one of the castle mounds, Humleore, has been excavated by the Danish National Museum of Cultural History.
The castle mounds are interesting places to visit, and they are often situated in the midst of a very beautiful nature where your fantasy can easily take you on a travel back in time.
